Bon Iver tonight
You know an indie rock band is having an impact when 43 year old ladies have their record. I was at a liquor store today and the topic of tonight's show came up and the clerk (aformentioned lady) remarked oh you mean the band who's name I can't pronounce....I love them. That would be Bon Iver (pronounced bahn eevair). I didn't mention their name at first because well I thought she would have no clue. But its one thing for a band to be blowing up and people to start paying attention in the indie rock world (basically mid to late 20 year old college kids and young professionals) and another for 40 year old liquor clerks to have the band's record (I can't imagine that being a key Pitchfork demographic). It might have something to do with NPR featuring the record a lot. But whatever the reason listening to Bon Iver, its not suprising they have wide appeal. The debut album "For Emma, Forever Ago" is simply beautiful. Justin Vernon's unique voice makes the record stick out more than most. The hushed guitar and sweet melodies are the perfect winter soundtrack. That's exactly what Vernon was planning to experience when he moved back to his hometown of Eau Claire, WI following the breakup of his band DeYarmond Edison (which had moved to North Carolina from Eau Claire in 2005). Vernon had planned to hole up in his dad's cabin for the winter, chill out and chop wood. He did that but also began profusely writing music. The result was "For Emma, Forever Ago" which he self released in October of 2007 under the name Bon Iver (deliberately misspelled french for "good winter"). The blogs and many others quickly took notice of the record. Jagjaguwar (home of Okkervil River and Black Mountain) took notice as well and signed Bon Iver and re-released the record in February. By then many had heard of it, in fact when the band kicked off a joint tour with Black Mountain in Washington, D.C. NPR broadcast the concert live. Ever since the band has been selling out shows across the country and in March started the headline portion of the tour which will come to the Aquarium tonight. In May, the record gets reissued by 4AD in Europe and the band embarks on a tour to conquer another continent. This is definitely one of those shows that people may talk about for a while and they may be one of those acts who won't be playing a venue the size of the Aquarium if they ever visit Fargo again. They are definitely headed in that direction. Live, Justin Vernon is aided by 3 members giving some of the standout tracks a fuller sound. The songs you have fell in love with, its been said become even better. So tonight probably the hottest acts in indie rock this side of Vampire Weekend will be in town for the low price of $6, make sure you catch it even though its a Monday. American Music Club Wednesday
There aren't many musical acts formed in the early to mid 1980's that are still kicking. While American Music Club has seen many lineups, the core of singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel and guitarist Vudi has remained entact and the band is sticking around kicking off a month and half long tour earlier this month. While American Music Club did have a 10 year hiatus from 1993 to 2003, the band returned in 2004 with a new record "Love Songs For Patriots" for popular indie label Merge Records (home of The Arcade Fire and Spoon). In February of this year, the band released a follow up, its 9th entitled "the Golden Age". As with any band that ages (Replacements anyone?) American Music Club have gotten mellower with age. While earlier work veered to REMish rock, the newer stuff is melodic pop ballad meditations seen through Eitzel's eyes. Widely regarded as an accomplished and talented songwriter, Eitzel weaves his tales through the soundscape leaving indeliable impressions in your mind. This is definitely a band where you can hear all the vocals and sing along to all the lyrics. The arrangements are grand and so are the notions and aim the band is going for. But with 20 years under your belt, who could blame them? You get the feeling American Music Club have seen it all (from up and coming buzz band to major label darling to failed commerical success to reformed resurgance) but don't seem to be bitter about the whole experience. It probably helps having one of the best labels period in the country behind you. And you know what they say, that bands like the Replacements wouldn't be remembered in the same way, had they achieved major commerical success. So there's something to be said for the bands that have critical acclaim and a small cult following. We don't remember the ones who are a dime a dozen and are the latest flavor of the week. American Music Club make their Fargo debut on Wednesday at the Aquarium. Cover is $7 for 21+ with Twin Cities based Chris Koza Band returning to town to open, kicking off a West Coast tour after previous stops locally at the Sidestreet. Locals Riesage go first at 10 pm. Why? Monday
Oakland folk hopsters Why? roll into the Aquarium on Monday for an all-ages show. The band last played the FM area about 4 years ago at Ralphs. Since then the band has toured with Islands, the Silver Jews and Yo La Tengo and this past March released a new album called Alopecia, the result of a relocation last winter to Minneapolis to collaborate with Andrew Broder and Mark Erickson of Fog. Singer/songwriter Yoni Wolf is the main force behind Why? with his unique voice and lyrics bringing a somewhat bent perspective to the band. But really in some ways the band is the mere reflection of all the odd and strange things that populate our world but don't always get mentioned. Their is some definite hip hop influence in the music, but I think its unfair to call the band hip hop. Mainly Why? is just a good pop act, albeit one who is not easily defined or pigeonholed. With the release of their last album "Elephant Eyelash", the band saw more critical acclaim and attention, but that has not stopped the band from returning to Fargo, where they receieved a warm reception on a cold winter night despite not being that well known. Despite all the added pressure of becoming more well known, Why? has delivered with a fabulous new record that should only add to their hype. The band also is very adept at performing all of its songs near perfectly live despite the obstacles of each member using multiple instruments while recording. One of the most truly interesting and original acts in the world of indie rock right now, check out Why for an early evening show on Monday night. Locals Fake Project and the New Instructions.
